Lucca is the birthplace of the composer Giacomo Puccini. Founded as a colony of ligurians (the old name Luca comes perhaps from a Celto-Ligurian root meaning marshy place) and has developed as a Roman city of 180 BC, in the 6th century, Lucca became the capital of the Lombard Duchy of Tuscia then developed in the 12th century as a city, then a Republic. Despite the continuous struggles between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines and the wars with Pisa and Florence, she met a considerable reputation in Europe thanks to its bankers and trade in textiles. Apart from brief periods in which she fell under the domination of foreign powers or people like Castruccio Castracani and Paolo Guinigi, Lucca remained an independent Republic until 1799. June 23, 1805, at the request of the Senate of Lucca, formed the Principality of Lucca and Piombino.
