Santa Maria di Leuca is a laughing tourist town is the pearl of the extreme flap of Italy, divides the two seas: the Adriatic from the Ionian. Known since antiquity, Santa Maria di Leuca has always been forced landing in maritime traffic between East and West. In its inlet have stopped navigators such as Cretan, Phoenicians and Greeks, peoples who have brought their civilization to the world. Legend has it that they were the first Greek sailors who arrived in this corner of paradise, christened it leukos, which means White Light – Illuminated by the Sun. The 19th-century villas. Hundreds of tourists flock to the streets of the town to admire the wonderful and elegant 19th-century villas that decline towards the promenade, once summer residences of the Apulian aristocracy. Characteristic of some of these mansions (especially those overlooking the promenade) was also to have on the cliff the bagnarola or a kind of cottage in the shape of a pagoda, which hid from the sight of the people the ladies while enjoying the baths in the summer months. Each bathrobe belonged to a villa, of which it bore its style or, above all, the colors. Today there are only a couple left, but in disuse. Santa Maria di Leuca is fascinating not only for its history but also, for the numerous and evocative caves with unusual shapes to which singular names have been attributed.
